For our final Fall Stewardship Challenge event, we’re giving thanks to Sugar Creek by protecting its banks and improving its future. Eroding streambanks here threaten water quality, aquatic habitat, and the stability of the surrounding floodplain. This project uses live stakes and other low-tech bioengineering techniques to stabilize vulnerable banks while working with the creek’s natural processes—not against them.

By planting deep-rooted native vegetation in key hydraulic zones, we’ll reduce sedimentation, filter runoff, and help reconnect the stream to its floodplain. This approach not only secures the bank but also allows the creek to meander naturally, form habitat-rich features, and trap sediment during high flows. Over time, these living structures grow stronger, providing lasting ecological benefits for the entire watershed.

All tools and materials will be provided. Wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for work along uneven, sometimes muddy banks. Let’s wrap up the season strong—and serve up one last helping of habitat restoration before winter sets in.
