Be among the first to explore The Wilderness Center’s newest preserve while helping prepare a fallow field for its transformation into a thriving native prairie. This workday focuses on maintaining burn breaks, clearing encroaching woody vegetation, and creating snags—standing deadwood that provides vital perches for birds and habitat for insects.
These efforts are the first step toward a prescribed burn and winter frost seeding, laying the groundwork for a resilient prairie that will boost biodiversity, support pollinators, and provide critical habitat for grassland birds. It’s a rare opportunity to shape an ecosystem from the ground up and witness its evolution for years to come.
All tools and materials will be provided. Wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for field work in open terrain.
