It takes a whole community...
The Wilderness Center relies on volunteers for a number of different tasks and jobs. Your help is one of our most valuable resources! By donating your time, you are directly supporting Conservation, Education, and our Community.
There are a number of different jobs that volunteers can do. Take a look below and then fill out our volunteer interest form. We would love to have you as a volunteer at TWC!
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AT TWC
ENCHANTED FOREST
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 10th & SATURDAY, OCTOBER 11th
- PUMPKIN CARVING ~ A drop-in activity in our Lake View Shelter on Thursday, October 9th!
The Enchanted Forest Trail is lined with 100 jack-o-lanterns, and we need your help carving them! Fun for youth groups, church groups, scout groups, hiking clubs, and more! Bring a friend and help us create some cool, friendly pumpkins for our Enchanted Forest trail!
- ENCHANTED FOREST CHARACTER ~ Help us bring the Enchanted Forest to life!
This Year's Characters Include: Raccoon, Spider, Salamander, Caterpillar, Tree Frog, and Opossum.
Shifts Available: Friday, October 10th, 5:00 - 10:00 pm and Saturday, October 11th, 3:00 - 7:00 pm & 5:30 - 10:00 pm.
*Select your shift and indicate your preferred character (if you have one) in the signup form.
- FIREFLY ~ This is one of the best ways to experience the Enchanted Forest!
Carry a solar-powered lantern and help lead groups of people through the Enchanted Forest.
Shifts Available: Friday, October 10th, 6:00 - 10:00 pm and Saturday, October 11th, 3:30 - 7:00 pm & 6:30 - 10:00 pm.
*If you are only available for part of a shift, then please sign up anyway, and include your availability on the form. Thanks!
- Snack and Beverage ~ Greet guests after their journey through the Enchanted Forest!
Help pour cider and hand out snacks.

Birdseed Sale Pick Up Days:

Tree of Life Tree Planting (April):
- Plant saplings in an area at TWC that needs reforested
Front Desk Greeter & Gift Shop:
- Welcome visitors and answer
questions - Fill bird feeders
- Help shoppers find items and with
checking out
Native Plant Sale (March-May):
- Planting and watering
- Sorting plants and pulling orders
- Helping customers during Native
Plant Pick Up Days
Conservation:
- Invasive plant control
- Clean ups at various properties
- Trail maintenance
- Seed collection and cleaning
- Planting events
Education:
- Assisting with programs, field trips,
camps, outreach, and events - Interpretation in the building
- Ambassador animal care (turtles,
snake, observation beehive) - Help lead guided hikes and night hikes
- Citizen science activities (bioblitz, bird counts, etc.)
Foxfield Preserve:
- Conservation activities:
- Invasives removal
- Grave mulching, raking
- Bluebird box repair/monitoring
- Trash pick up on Alabama Ave and Foxfield St
- Support of burial activities:
- Decorating grave sites with on-site natural plant material (preferably invasives)
- Site preparation for cremation
burials (clearing area with
commercial electric brush cutter,
digging hole, decorating) - Volunteer Pall bearer
Pop-Up Opportunities:
- Exciting, surprise things like helping
with special events or even constructing a willow tunnel!

Store Greeters are multi-taskers! They are the friendly faces that TWC visitors see and refer to for help when needed.

Grounds and Maintenance volunteers keep the trails and Interpretive Building looking beautiful!

Docents/Educators are volunteers who help with adult and children education programming and serve on the Education Committee.
