Curiosity and observation are core elements of science. TWC is an incredible outdoor classroom where homeschool students can explore their environment, conduct hands-on investigations, and follow their curiosity with support from our naturalists and their peers. This program aims to foster inquiry skills, creativity, and community-building through nature exploration and fun!

Decomposition Exploration

We’ll kick off our session today by trying to solve the Case of the Disappearing Log. Students will examine how dead trees change over time, propose explanations for their observations, and then use a key to match different decomposers with the evidence they leave behind.  We’ll take what we’ve learned and continue to investigate other parts of TWC’s forests to better understand the marvels of decomposition.

Students will:

  • Explore fallen logs and find evidence of change.
  • Use cause and effect as a thinking tool to build understanding.
  • Learn about decomposers.
  • Use a key to identify evidence and likely cause.

Open to ages 9 and up, this program has limited capacity. All active participants must register.
