TWC’s Director of Conservation will lead you through an ongoing restoration site. The hike will be approximately 1-2 miles long and is moderate difficulty because there are no existing trails onsite.
Falcon Flats is a closed preserve that consists of 144 acres of wetland and swamp forest. The preserve reverted to natural habitat after being farmed for many years. Although it was named after the Fairless mascot and is adjacent to Fairless Elementary School, there is a pair of nesting bald eagles on site rather than falcons. This year, two young eagles were spotted wrestling in front of one of our wildlife cameras! Through wildlife camera monitoring, we have also documented river otter, red fox, bobcat, coyote, song birds, and many other species at Falcon Flats.
Sugar Creek runs directly through the preserve for nearly one mile which has created abundant opportunities for wetlands. Through mitigation banking, TWC has a major wetland restoration occurring at Falcon Flats. Existing wetlands are being enhanced by planting thousands of plugs and shrubs that will thrive in wetlands, invasive species management, and the creation of several new wetlands from scratch. This project will greatly improve the habitat quality which will continue to support abundant wildlife and plant diversity.
Bring appropriate clothing and footwear for hiking. No restrooms available.
