Wilderness Sprouts: Butterfly Bonanza!
Thu., June 5, 10 a.m.
Butterfly Bonanza! Go on a butterfly safari and catch butterflies. We will also make a butterfly mobile to hang in your window. Children ages 3-5 with an adult. $4/member; $6/nonmember; adults free.

Annie’s Notebook Thu., Jun. 5, 10 a.m.
Annie Dillard was the Pilgrim at Tinker Creek. Her book is a journal of her observations. She writes: “In nature I find grace tangled in a rapture with violence; I find an intricate landscape whose forms are fringed with death; I find mystery, newness, and a kind of exuberant, spendthrift energy.” Dillard’s writing introduces us to keeping a nature journal.
Joanne Lehman, a poet and free-lance writer, holds a bachelors degree in communication arts. Sheauthored three books, including Morning Song, which won the 2004 Wick Poetry Prize. Joanne enjoys sharing her love of writing, literature, and the environment.

Star Watch & Planetarium Show

Fri., Jun. 6, 8 p.m.
Join TWC’s Astronomy Club for a Planetarium Show, then view the real things through telescopes. All ages. Free.

Family Day Sat., Jun. 7, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Bring the whole family out to TWC for this Family Day! Naturalists and volunteers will be on hand to help you recycle old paper into new, see a snake or Planetarium Show, and try a dip net at the pond. Children of all ages can also feed the fish and geese and try a scavenger hunt. Pack a lunch and make a day of it! Free.

Birding for Kids Thu., Jun. 12, 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Learn to identify birds, go on a bird walk and play bird bingo! Study the life cycle of the bluebird and observe them at the nest. Fun family time for kids (and their adults) interested in birds. Free.

Geocache Breakfast Chat

It’s Turtle Time Again!

Carrie will be studying the turtles in the lake again this summer. If you would like to learn more about the program or see turtle marking in action, she will be at the lake. There is no formal program, just a chance to stop by and see what we have been learning. Story Time: Fabulous Frogs

Meet our frog friends! We’ll hear frog stories, play frog games, sing frog songs, and make frog sounds. Then we’ll walk to the pond to hunt for frogs.
Stories are for 3-4 year olds, but younger and older children are welcome, if you think they’ll be interested. Dress for the weather. Free for members; donation requested from nonmembers. Join Naturalist Carrie Elvey for a snake walk–we’ll be checking the coverboards around TWC. Come prepared to be outside–we’ll be in open field and brushy areas. Free hike will last about 1 hr.

Where did that snail go? We’ll have snail tales, follow the snail’s trail, and look for snail eggs. Finish with a snail race!

Wild Cooks: Summer Feast

Fri., Jul. 18, 9:30 a.m.
Your food choices need not be limited to the supermarket! Make interesting new dishes with wild foods. We’ll forage wild plants, prepare them, and taste the results. You’ll go home with recipes and techniques to make more!

We can’t guarantee when plants will be ready for harvest, so we may change the menu based on what’s available. Wild game or fish will be gathered in advance by legal hunters, not by participants during class. We will supplement with store-bought foods.We have permission to gather TWC plants for these classes only; gathering is not otherwise allowed at TWC. Instructors: Chuck Hass, Joann Ballbach, and Carrie Elvey.
Sessions are physically demanding. We will spend 3 or more hours walking and foraging, then prepare, eat, and clean up. Adults; max. 20. Bring hand pruning shears and gardening gloves, Dress for the weather. $20/member; $25/nonmember. Deadline: Jul. 11.

Family Astronomy: Walk Through the Solar System
Sat., Jul. 19, 2 p.m.
Take a tour through our solar system from the Sun to Pluto! We’ll walk TWC’s Pond Trail, visiting each planet and the Moon, creating a scale-model solar system. The trick question: What is space mostly made of? After this walk, you’ll REALLY get it! All ages. Free.

Volunteer Party Thu., Jul. 24, 6:30 p.m.
The theme for this year’s big thank you volunteer party is “Our Volunteers are Shining Stars.” The party will be held on Thu., Jul. 24 at 6:30 p.m. and volunteers will walk the red carpet, have the paparazzi taking your pictures, place your hand prints on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, have a chance to receive an Oscar and be treated like the star you are! You may dress like a star if you wish. You could be interviewed about your star performance, what you are wearing and your designer.
Dinner of roast beef in gravy, baked chicken, scalloped potatoes, green beans, salad, beverage and cake is included.
The dinner is free to our volunteers, but we need to know if you are attending to reserve your meal. Please call TWC at 1-877-359-5235 to make your reservation.

Outdoor Enhanced Learning

Tue., Jul. 29-Fri., Aug. 1, 9 a.m.
This workshop, focusing on ways to use the outdoors as an instructional tool, is primarily for K-8 teachers, although anyone may attend. Sessions emphasize practical ways to incorporate the outdoors into teaching a variety of content areas. Instructors Susan Cook, Laura Grimm, and Herb Broda bring a wealth of practical knowledge and many years of experience in using the outdoors as a teaching tool.
Attend one or more sessions—any combination is possible!
Tue., July 29 Introduction to outdoor enhanced learning. Bringing the outdoors in to the classroom. Adventure/challenge education. GPS as a teaching tool.
Wed., July 30 School grounds as an outdoor classroom. On-site demonstration of Kidron Elementary schoolgrounds as an instructional tool. Working with kids outside.
Thu., July 31 Using offsite resources, including The Wilderness Center and resident outdoor education. Place-based education. Building support with administrators, parents, and colleagues. Books and resources.
Fri., Aug. 1 Outdoor enhanced learning in math, language arts, social studies, science, the arts, etc. Links to the Ohio Academic Content Standards. Project Wild.
