Join a naturalist at 10 a.m. on the 1st Wed. every month for a walk on our trails. See what’s interesting today! All ages. Free.

Wilderness Sprouts: Totally Tadpoles
Thu., Jun. 4, 10 a.m.
Join us as we learn all about tadpoles. Make a craft showing the frog lifecycle, then take a hike to the pond to look at real tadpoles. Children ages 3-5 with an adult. $4/member; $6/nonmember; adults free.

Letterboxing 101 Fri., Jun. 5, 6-8 p.m.
Discover this fun activity that you can do alone or with family. Letterboxing is finding small boxes containing special rubber stamps that you can use to mark your own journal. Make a temporary stamp of your own to use on some practice letterboxes that will be hiding at The Wilderness Center. All materials will be provided. Free, but please preregister so we can have supplies ready. All ages. Mary Hultman, Stark Parks.

Star Watch & Planetarium Show Fri., Jun. 5, 8 p.m.
Join TWC’s Astronomy Club for a Planetarium Show, then view the real things through telescopes for IYA, the International Year of Astronomy. All ages. Free.

Family Day Sat., Jun. 6, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Bring the whole family out to TWC for this Family Day! Naturalists and volunteers will be on hand to help you recycle old paper into new, see a snake or planetarium show, and try a dip net at the pond. Children of all ages can also feed the fish and geese and try a scavenger hunt. Pack a lunch and make a day of it! Free.

Butterfly Walk Wed., Jun. 10, 11 a.m.
We will walk the butterfly transect in the Prairie to view the common butterflies visiting the area. Each participant will receive the booklet Common Butterflies and Skippers of Ohio, a Division of Wildlife publication. Cancelled if raining. Free.

Environment Investigators: Wetlands Exploration
Thu., Jun. 11, 10:30 a.m.-12 Pond, 1-2:30 p.m. Stream
Wetlands are important homes for plants and animals. Learn about the different types of animals that live in the pond and stream and then try to find some of them using nets and turning over rocks. We will bring pond insects back to the lab to look at them under microscopes and we will conduct water flow experiments at the stream. Wear shoes that can get wet for the stream exploration. You can join us for one or both! Environment Investigators programs are geared for all ages of children working with adults. Free.

Foxfield Preserve Info Session

Sat., Jun. 13, 11 a.m.
Foxfield Preserve is a nature preserve cemetery at TWC. Natural burial is an economical, environmentally friendly alternative to modern burial, as fewer resources are used. As a nature preserve, we provide wildlife habitat, a clean watershed, and clean air. Walking trails allow the community to enjoy beauty and serenity of the preserve. A natural burial at Foxfield Preserve leaves a permanent legacy for your family, community, and the natural world. Free info session.

Tonight’s Sky: Little Planets Sat., Jun. 13, 2 p.m.
Study the little planets—Pluto and its three new friends. Learn why Pluto is no longer a major planet and about its new family of solar system bodies in the Kuiper Belt. Then, use the planetarium to look at tonight’s sky, including Pluto. TWC docent Ken Renner. Everyone welcome. Free.

Environment Investigators: Insect Exploration
Tue., Jun. 16, 10:30 a.m. noon or 1-2:30 p.m.
There are many tiny creatures buzzing around at this time of year. Learn about the different types of insects and then go outdoors to catch them! We will talk about the different types of creatures we find and then release them back to their home. Two different time periods are offered, but we will do the same thing each time. Join us for one or the other! Environment Investigators programs are geared for all ages of children working with adults. Free.

Story Time: Rainbow of Colors Wed., Jun. 17, 11 a.m.
There’s always a rainbow of colors at TWC. Hear stories about colors, sing a rainbow song, then go outside to look for all the colors of the rainbow. Stories are for 3-4 year olds, but younger and older children are welcome, if they’d be interested. Dress for the weather. Free for members; donation requested from nonmembers. Registration is optional.

Family Astronomy: Star Clusters Sat., Jun. 20, 2 p.m.
It’s the International Year of Astronomy! 400 years ago, Galileo first used a telescope to observe the night sky.All year, we’re reliving Galileo’s discoveries and learning how astronomy has advanced since. In June: Some stars, like our Sun, are loners. Others are in groups of two or more. Tour some clusters and learn where to find them with your binoculars in the night sky. Celebrate IYA! Free.

Tonight’s Sky: Gravity and the LHC

Sat., Jun. 27, 2 p.m.
Examine gravity, the odd force out in the universe, its features, and how it may reach outside of our universe, which is where the Large Hadron Collider comes in—it may shatter every assumption. Conclude with a planetarium show of tonight’s sky. Docent Ken Renner. Everyone welcome. Free.

Amateur Radio Club Weekend Event
Sat., Jun. 27, noon to Sun., Jun. 28, noon
The Amateur Radio Field Day is an annual amateur radio exercise, widely sponsored by IARU regions and member organizations, encouraging emergency communications preparedness among amateur radio operators. It is typically the largest single emergency preparedness exercise in the U.S., with over 30,000 operators participating each year.

Snakes of Ohio Sat., Jul. 4,10 a.m.
Celebrate Independence Day with the snakes of the TWC. At 10, Naturalist Carrie Elvey will lead a walk to look for snakes in the field and woods. At 11, join her for a slide show program about the snakes of Ohio, then meet a hognose and black rat snake. Come for one or both programs. Free. Dress to be off trail for the snake walk.

Discover mushrooms with artist & mushroom forager Julie Powell. Learn the basics of mushroom gathering. Identify edible and non-edible mushrooms. Identify the trees mushrooms grow under. A selection of Ms Powell’s mushroom sculptures will be on display the afternoon of the program. Adults. Free.

Tonight’s Sky: The Moon Sat., Jul. 11, 2 p.m.
A geological history of the Moon, and how the Moon influences the Earth. A look at the manned missions of the 1970s and their accomplishments. Then a look at the upcoming Moon missions, the new spacecraft involved, and the new set of goals. Last, a planetarium show of tonight’s sky. Docent Ken Renner. Everyone welcome. Free.

Summer Story Concert Sat., Jul. 11, 7 p.m.
Missed our May Storytelling Concert? You still have time to plan to be at our July 11 concert. Summer will be in full swing and so will our storytellers. Come on out and top off the week with an evening of tales, yarns, and legends. Bring a friend to share the evening with, or two or three, but please come. Musical Mark Bat Songs Concert

Fri., Jul. 17, 6:30 p.m.
Musical Mark’s “outta the cave” and coming to TWC! His CD, We’re Just Hangin’ Out, has original songs about bats—super fun and educational, too.
The show has Mark in bat costume with multi-media sound, exciting props, and special effects. It’s totally WOW! You have to see and hear it to believe it! After the show, he’ll come out for photos with the audience. Autographs too! Don’t miss this one! This is a children’s concert, so... $8/child member, $10/child nonmember. Adults 16 and older half price if accompanied by a child.

Family Astronomy: Black Holes Sat., Jul. 18, 2 p.m.
It’s the International Year of Astronomy! 400 years ago, Galileo first used a telescope to observe the night sky. All year, we’re reliving Galileo’s discoveries and learning how astronomy has advanced since. In July: “The Milky Way is nothing else but a mass of innumerable stars planted together in clusters.” -Galileo. There is more—including black holes! Discover current ideas about black holes and get a map of some in our night sky. Celebrate IYA! Free.

Country Sunrise Special Concert Fri., Jul. 24, 7 p.m.
Country Sunrise Special has been joyfully makin’ music for over 25 years. Its early beginnings were as The Nicholas Family some 60 years ago. Art Nicholas, his father, siblings, spouse, and children, represented Ohio and West Virginia at the International Folklife Festivals in the 1970s. The Nicholas Family’s music is included in history files of America at the Smithsonian.
Today, Country Sunrise Special offers tight mixed vocal harmonies and strong acoustic instrumentation, including banjo, mandolin, fiddle, guitar, autoharp, harmonica and bass, in a pleasant mix of Bluegrass, Country, Gospel, Western-swing, and Old-time melodies. Turtle Day Sat., Jul. 25, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
It’s turtle time again at The Wilderness Center! Join Naturalist Carrie Elvey for her turtle marking program. Learn how and why we conduct this study, see some turtles up close, and enjoy the afternoon at the lake turtle watching. At 11, there will be a short program in the building to discuss the types of turtles and basic turtle ecology. Then, stop by the lake anytime between 11:30 and 3 and visit with Carrie and the turtles.

Tonight’s Sky: The Milky Way Sat., Jul. 25, 2 p.m.
A look at the galaxy we live in, how it was formed, and some of its amazing features. Compare our galaxy with other types of galaxies in our universe, plus our neighboring galaxies and how they relate to the distant future of our galaxy. Finally, a planetarium look at tonight’s sky. TWC docent Ken Renner. Everyone welcome. Free.

Annual Volunteer Party Thu., Jul. 30, 6:30 p.m.
The Clubs will sponsor putt-putt holes! We will serve a meal, present Distinguished Service Awards and play putt-putt. Please bring a putter with you to share with your group. Free for TWC volunteers. Please register by calling TWC if you have volunteered in 2008-09.
